Ranma ½ (2024) Episode 3 Review

Just spent my Sunday evening watching the new Ranma ½ episode, and I seriously can't stop thinking about it. This remake is hitting different, and I need to talk about why Episode 3 had me grinning like an idiot the whole time.

The New Look

Alright, so MAPPA has been killing it with their recent shows, but what they did with Ranma this episode was something else. Remember that classic fight between Ranma and Kuno? The one where they're running across the school yard? It looked INCREDIBLE. I actually rewound it three times just to catch all the little details. The way Ranma's hair flows during the transformation scenes made me pause and appreciate how far anime animation has come.

The Real MVP: Nabiki

Can we talk about Nabiki for a second? Because she was absolutely savage this episode. I lost it when she was selling those photos to Kuno with that innocent look on her face. The best part? She didn't even have to lie - she just let Kuno jump to his own wrong conclusions and profit. I swear, she'd be a millionaire in today's influencer age.

Those Feels Though

Look, I know Ranma and Akane are supposed to be this whole "we're only engaged because our parents said so" thing, but there was this one moment... You know the one. When Akane had to carry Ranma home? The way they animated their expressions, especially that split-second where Ranma actually looks grateful? My heart wasn't ready.

The Little Things I Noticed

  • Dr. Tofu completely losing it around Kasumi still makes me laugh
  • That new background music during the fight scenes hits just right
  • Kasumi's oblivious smile somehow looks even more wholesome in HD
  • They kept that iconic "I'm not cute!" line from Akane

A Small Gripe

Ok, I get why they had to tone down some scenes. It's 2024, and times have changed. But did they really need to add so many convenient steam clouds during the transformation scenes? It felt a bit much, especially during that quick change in the school corridor. Just saying.

Final Thoughts

This episode was solid gold. It took everything I loved about the original and gave it a fresh coat of paint. The humor still lands, the fights look amazing, and somehow they managed to make me care even more about these characters I've known for years.

If you're sleeping on this remake because "they'll never capture the magic of the original" - wake up! This is the real deal. And if you're new to Ranma ½, you're in for such a treat.

Next week's preview has me hyped - looks like we're getting to THAT story arc. You know the one. My inner 90s kid can't wait.

Rating: A solid 9/10 - would watch Nabiki scheme again.

Question for other fans: What's your favorite Nabiki scheme so far? Because that photo business is definitely up there for me.

P.S. I may have ordered hot and cold water thermoses online after watching this episode. Just in case.

This review was brought to you by my complete inability to be productive on a Sunday night because I was too busy rewatching fight scenes.
